Konsep in-between space dalam arsitektur vernakular di Indonesia: kajian content analysis

Abstrak
Ruang dan arsitektur saling terkait dan saling melingkupi. Ruang memiliki pengertian luas, baik dari sisi letak, privasi, maupun fungsi. Relasi dua ruang menghasilkan suasana dan kesan berbeda. Penelitian mengenai ruang telah banyak dilakukan, sedangkan topik mengenai ‘ruang di antara’ belum banyak digali. Penelitian bertujuan menggali pemahaman mengenai ruang di antara (in-between space) agar tercipta pemahaman yang jernih; serta mengidentifikasi konsep in-between space dalam arsitektur vernakular Batak Toba. Sebagaimana arsitektur vernakular, arsitektur Batak Toba memiliki makna dalam mendefinisikan ruang, oleh sebab itu penting untuk menggali konsep in-between space pada arsitektur vernakular Batak Toba. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan metode content analysis, dengan menggali teks dan gambar/foto terkait konsep in-between space, dan arsitektur Batak Toba. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan konsep in-between space memiliki pemahaman terciptanya overlap dua ruang sehingga suasana keduanya dirasakan secara bersamaan. In-between space bukan ruang definitif. Konsep in-between space terindikasi dimiliki arsitektur Batak Toba, baik dalam konteks hubungan privasi, fungsi, maupun lingkungan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, disimpulkan bahwa in-between space memberi ciri kunci pada arsitektur Batak Toba dan itu harus menjadi elemen fundamental arsitektur berciri Batak Toba yang dirancang pada era modern. Hasil penelitian menjadi inspirasi untuk penelitian lebih lanjut, secara mendalam atau meluas pada kasus arsitektur etnis yang lain.
